Digital thread vs digital twin
A digital twin is a model of the thing being built — how it behaves, performs, or fails. A digital thread is the connected record of the work: which requirement drove which design, which test verified it, what evidence supports it, who approved it, and what changed since.
A twin answers "how does the product behave?" A thread answers "how do we know this product is what we said it would be?"
Why integration-based threads decay
When the thread is assembled from adapters between requirements tools, PLM, ALM, test systems, and shared drives, the same work object exists in each of them. Identity, revision, and state have to be kept in agreement across every hop.
Every schema change, migration, or tool swap costs thread integrity, and the people maintaining the mapping become part of the architecture. The recurring symptom is familiar: exports to spreadsheets, manual impact assessment, and evidence assembled by hand before an audit.
Born connected instead of connected later
The alternative is not another integration layer. It is for the work itself to be native to one governed model, with the applications acting as views over it.
The same object can appear as a paragraph in a document, a row in a sheet, a node on a canvas, and a card in a plan while remaining one object with one revision history, one owner, and one set of relationships.
